To understand why we celebrate this day today, let's take a look at the historical context. In 1975, the United Nations declared March 8th as International Women's Day. Why March 8th? In 1857, during the Industrial Revolution, thousands of textile workers in New York took to the streets to protest against poor working conditions under the slogan "Bread and Roses". "It is considered one of the first demonstrations in the fight for rights, and served as a reference for setting today's date."
